June 3, 2002 Large Public Power Council Elects New Leaders
Jan Eileen Schori, general manager and CEO of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), has become the first woman to serve as Chairperson of the Large Public Power Council (LPPC). The LPPC represents the country's largest locally owned power providers on national energy issues. "Energy issues are reaching a new level of importance for Americans," Schori said. "I will work to ensure that customers of large public power systems are represented effectively at the federal level." Schori is a native of Sacramento and a 23-year veteran of SMUD, the nation's sixth-largest locally owned electric system. She was named SMUD's general counsel in 1988 and named general manager and CEO in 1994. Schori was elected Chairperson of the LPPC at the group's spring meeting in Nebraska City, Nebraska. William R. Mayben, president of the Nebraska Public Power District, was elected Vice Chairperson. Both were elected for two-year terms. The LPPC's membership includes 24 of the nation's largest publicly owned, not-for-profit energy systems. Through direct participation of the chief executives of its member organizations, LPPC works with citizens and elected officials to develop consumer-oriented positions on national energy issues - and advance those positions with state and national lawmakers and regulators. From Seattle and Phoenix to New York and Florida, LPPC members provide reliable, low-cost electricity to more than 40 million people, including tens of thousands of businesses in some of America's fastest-growing markets. Combined, LPPC members generate more than 200 billion kilowatt hours a year. LPPC members have led the push for environmentally friendly "green power" programs, which allow customers to purchase renewable energy such as solar power, wind power and power generated from landfill gas. ###
