To Maintain Energy Security and Win the AI Race, Federal Policy Must Take Proactive Steps to Unleash Public Power

Meeting rising electricity demand calls for significant investment in new generation and transmission infrastructure. LPPC filed comments in response to the Department of Energy’s request for information on Accelerating Speed to Power/Winning the Artificial Intelligence Race: Federal Action to Rapidly Expand Grid Capacity and Enable Electricity Demand Growth.
In its comments, LPPC recommends federal action to modernize Treasury private use rules, revise EPA’s Phase I CO₂ performance standards to reflect realistic operating conditions, and advance interconnection and tariff improvements that would provide long-term planning certainty and help unlock more than 3 GW of public power projects.
LPPC shares the Department of Energy’s commitment to ensuring Americans have access to affordable, reliable electricity. With targeted changes to existing regulatory frameworks, the United States can strengthen its energy security, support AI-driven economic growth, and enable new public power investment in critical energy infrastructure that serves data centers, bolsters reliability, and keeps rates low.
